POSTED 05/14/08:
The 2008 Tuesday Night Training Series
is ON HOLD while the course is under construction.
There will be no event on May 20.
We will monitor the course every
week and will hold an event if the course is available during the
construction. Check back here for a weekly update!
The first
race is at 6:00 pm. The series will continue every Tuesday until
the end of September.
Tuesday Night Flyer
Tuesday, April 15, the event began with a memorial for Pieter Ombregt
(XXX Racing-AthletiCo). We remembered Pieter in words, a moment
of silence and a memorial lap.
The South Chicago Wheelmen sponsored
Tuesday Night Criterium Series is held every Tuesday Night at 6:00
p.m. from April until the end of September at the Ace Hardware Paint
Factory in Matteson, IL.
We thank Ace Hardware Paint for their continued sponsorship of this
event.
This is very popular Tuesday night Criterium race
training series with an emphasis on rider development in the most
popular racing format in the USA. Elite and professional racing
teams have used this event as a training ride in prep for races
like Downers Grove. It is some great racing.
In this multi-lap race format, bike handling, especially the ability
to handle many corners in a pack and sprinting, are important skills.
USAC Rule: These training races are
held under the permit of the USAC so a current annual or one day
license is required to participate. Both can be purchased at the
event. Juniors must have a CURRENT YEAR release signed by a parent
or legal guardian only. This requirement is applied at USAC races,
as well. Helmets are mandatory.
The Course
The course is a flat, 1 km. rectangular access road around the factory.
The paved surface is excellent for fast, smooth racing!
Ace Hardware is located west of I-57 on Central Ave. between the
Lincoln Hwy (Rte. 30) and Sauk Trail Road exits (here is a map), Matteson.
Cost: $7.00 a night (includes USAC insurance).
All parking is in the south gravel parking lot ONLY.
The Format
Riders are separated into two categories, with races run concurrently:
"A" race - Category 1-3 riders
"B" race - Category 4-5 riders
Weather and Cancellation
The Chief Ref "calls it at the line" based on the conditions
just before the start of the race. We have had days where it rained
all day, but was fine for racing by 6:00. The course has one spot
where rain water may accumulate. We have extremely high success
rate for clearing any standing water before the event.
The benefits of showing up! Opportunity
to race competitively during the week. Great arena for beginners
to learn how to race. NOBODY is pulled from a race - If you get
dropped, hop right back in.
